Russian Fatima Zagubova, the world champion of kickboxing, and second-placed Elena Gismeeva, died in Sevastopol, Crimea.
The Russian Federation of Kickboxing said that after the end of the training camp in Crimea, the two athletes decided to swim in a yacht club, a place not equipped for swimming, in addition to warning of the storm in the city.
Fatima Zagubova collided with the platform while jumping in the water, and Elena Gismeeva rushed to help her, but the latter fell under a high wave and drowned.
Rescuers arrived at the scene of the disaster, but the water ship of the main department of the Emergency Ministry of the Russian Federation did not arrive because of the fourth-degree waves, strong winds.
Rescuers found the body of one of the girls floating on the surface of the water, while the other was not found, due to bad weather, and the first and second body was recovered only 70 minutes after the first.
Elena Gismeeva finished second in the 2017 world championships, weighing over 70 kg, and is the daughter of Almaz Gesmiev, nine-time world champion in kickboxing.
Fatima Zagubova was crowned world under 48kg champion, six-time champion of Russia, four-time World Cup winner and European champion.
