Muscat: The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) received an application of Al Hisn Perfumes Company to register its trademark internationally under Madrid protocol of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). It wanted the protection of ‘Al Hisn’ trademark which it uses for perfume products.

Ali Bin Hamad Al Mamari, Head of Industrial Property at the Intellectual Property Department, said: “The application for the registration of Al Hisn perfumes brand name is the first international application to be submitted from the Sultanate through this agreement. It is being filed at the international office of the WIPO based in Geneva. This will add value of the Sultanate at the international level.”

“The company wants international protection of this brand through which it will work in the area of development of perfumes, soaps, frankincense by distillation of aromatic plants and using them for manufacture of perfumes, soap and incense. It will be first Omani company seeking protection internationally under an agreement which is signed by 40 countries,” he added.

“The Madrid protocol is effective solution for marking and managing trademarks worldwide. To get this facility, one only has to apply once and pay only one fee to get protection in 119 countries. It also gives facility to amend the trademark, renew or expand its area through one centralised system. As the Sultanate of Oman has acceded to this agreement on October 16, 2007,” he said.

Al Mamari urged Omani companies who want to use their brand outside the country to protect them in accordance with the Madrid Protocol. This will save their money and time as they would have to send one application and pay one fee for this facility of protection in the countries which comes under the agreement. The Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of Bahrain are the only two countries of the Gulf region who have signed this agreement. This agreement provides protection only in these two countries of the Gulf.
