The longest of journeys begins with a single step, and with Week 1 of both the NFL and your fantasy football seasons officially in the books, your quest to win a championship is underway. Your draft is but a distant memory, and the roster that sits before you is, undoubtedly, going to need some maintenance.
Maybe that goose egg from Anthony Miller has you on edge, or perhaps you need to find insurance if JuJu Smith-Schuster’s bum toe is worse than reported. Whatever it is, you are now tasked with scouring the waiver wire to find the right replacement receiver.
Marquise “Hollywood” Brown had 147 yards and two touchdowns, and John Ross racked up 158 yards with two scores of his own. Both will be highly coveted by the rest of your league, and whether you use waiver priority or FAAB bidding, the cost to acquire either will be substantial.
But are they the right players to get? What kind of consistency are you going to get from them? Does the Ravens offense have you brimming with confidence that Brown will continue to hit pay dirt each week? What about the Bengals? Probably not.
You have to remember that it isn’t just the player in whom you are investing, but also his team’s offensive system. That’s why you have to look past the Week 1 statistics and seek out which offense will consistently be the most productive.

The injury to Tyreek Hill is one that is expected to keep him out for several weeks, and you should be looking to get a piece of that offense. It is highly unlikely Sammy Watkins, the new No. 1, is available on waivers. You will need to pry him away from his current owner, which could be a tall task coming off a three-TD day. Remind that owner of Watkins long injury history, just don’t mention that the potential reward for Watkins far outweighs that injury risk.
For waiver options, most will flock to rookie Mecole Hardman. He’s the bigger name and the shiny, new toy. But you’ll do better investing in lesser-known Demarcus Robinson, whose under-the-radar status will help you save on FAAB budget. The 24-year old flashed his talents last year when he scored three touchdowns over the last five games.
Coach Andy Reid tends to favor his veterans, and though Hardman may have higher long-term upside, he needs more time to develop. Robinson is ready for a larger role and will now be the No. 2 wideout in the league’s premier offense. And best of all, he’s likely to be less expensive. That’s just good business.
