Bar Review: McSorley’s Ale House

We scour the Hong Kong bar scene to bring you the new and noteworthy. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it! Here we check out McSorley’s Ale House on Staunton Street.

First impressions

Sometimes you just want to go to a pub and have a beer. The latest branch of McSorley’s Ale House now gives you that option in Soho. It’s conveniently located on Staunton Street and has the same relaxed vibe that can be found in its Discovery Bay and Macau branches. It has a wide street frontage but still feels cosy inside.

Flavours

As you would expect at any self-respecting Irish pub, Guinness is on tap. McSorley’s also has its own imported ale and it offers eight different craft beers from New Zealand, the UK, Australia, Germany and Spain.

A big focus for the Soho branch is whisky. There are more than 40 whiskies on offer, selected by the bar’s certified female whisky ambassador, Jessica Kwok.

The Soho branch has a casual dining menu of classic pub grub faves such as curry chips, and a savoury steak, Stilton and Guinness pie. The signature hearty premium handcrafted Angus burger is perfect if you have a hankering for a burger with your beer.

Favourites

As any McSorley’s regular knows, the bar has quite a reputation for its Indian menu. We visited on a Tuesday night when we were able to indulge in the Indian curry buffet, which is a weekly fixture from 6pm to 10pm. At $168 per person, it’s excellent value, and I happily had my fill of the signature chicken tikka masala, aloo tikki, onion bhaji and a very generous garlic naan. My vegetarian pal was pleased to find that a vegetarian aloo gobi and veggie samosas were available.

Couple this with a daily happy hour from 3pm to 8pm and it all adds up to a very welcome addition to the Soho scene.
