As Grand Canyon National Park marks its 100th birthday Tuesday, photographer @Pedromcbride is calling attention to the threats facing the natural wonder — among them a tram that would shuttle tourists and possible plans to drill for uranium. McBride decided to walk the length of the canyon — about 750 miles — for weeks at a time between November 2015 and October 2016, during which he suffered four sprained ankles, two broken fingers, lost two girlfriends and even threw his heart out of rhythm, requiring surgery. Still, he says it was worth it: “After spending so many months drenched in the silence and magic of the seventh natural wonder of the world, I know there is only one place that looks and sounds like this.” (📸: Peter McBride)
