Liverpool-born ex-Footballers’ Wives actress Phina Oruche excited to star in Hollyoaks

FORMER Footballers’ Wives actress Phina Oruche today told of her excitement at joining the cast of Hollyoaks.

Phina, who played WAG Liberty Baker in the ITV football drama, plays the mum of the soap’s newest family.

And Phina, who is originally from Toxteth, said being mum to two-year-old son Paolo helped her swot up on the job of heading up the new clan.

She also said the death of a close friend and spiritual mentor made her realise “life is for living” so she jumped at the chance to return to work.

The 40-year-old said: “This is heaven on earth for me. I’m proud to be from Liverpool. But I’ve never been privileged to work here before.

“We’re the producer Paul Marquess’s first new family. It’s an honour that we are being brought in to something already successful.”

Phina’s screen husband and their two children arrive in the fictional Chester suburb in June.

The actress started filming for the part of Gabby Sharpe at Childwall-based Lime Pictures in April after being signed up by Paul Marquess, who created Footballers’ Wives.

She said: “I definitely wanted to be a mum and I wanted to spend time with my child. But I found motherhood very difficult. It’s incredible but you do have an identity crisis. I did think how will I get back into acting because our business is fickle.

“My friend Roxanna Floyd was like a sister and brought me into my faith. She passed away unexpectedly from breast cancer in January and I realised life is for living.

“After she died I was really down and it was the perfect time for me to get the job. When I went to Lime Pictures I saw they have a little nursery which makes it a lot easier for me to go to work.”

Phina, who appeared in the sixth series of TV jungle reality show I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, is on screen from June 18.
