Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might have brought the Skywalker Saga to an end, but it left some long-running sequel trilogy questions unanswered.
One of the most enduring mysteries has been the Knights of Ren – and we don’t mean what the actual point of them was. Instead, we mean how Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) came to join them back when he was innocent(ish) Ben Solo.
Thankfully, like with his adventures on Mustafar and Palpatine’s fleet on Exegol, we now have some answers from the wider Star Wars canon when it comes to Kylo Ren’s past with the Knights of Ren.

Charles Soule and Will Sliney’s comic book series The Rise of Kylo Ren has previously shed some light on the mysterious group, revealing that they first came into contact with Ben Solo when he travelled to a Jedi outpost on Elphrona with Luke Skywalker.
There, the Knights of Ren had a little battle with Luke and lost miserably, but Ben never forgot about them. At the end of issue two, he set off to find them and that’s where we meet him at the start of issue three.
Ben meets up with them again on Varnak and asks to join them, with the group’s leader Ren revealing the price of admission: “It’s a death, Ben Solo. A good death.”
So, basically, membership to the Knights of Ren is a bit like James Bond getting his 00 licence. In Ian Fleming’s original novels, Bond had to kill someone in completing an assignment to get his 00 number and had actually killed two people, much like we saw at the start of Casino Royale.
Luckily for Ben, he tells Ren that he’s already killed a Jedi. Turns out that three of Luke’s students – Voe, Hennix and Tai – chased after him following the destruction of the Jedi temple.
He had gone back to Elphrona to see if he “could find a path to you and the other Knights”. It looks like he’s about to kill Voe when Ben Force throws her off a cliff, but he saves her, only to inadvertently kill Hennix when he deflects a lightsaber back at him.
At least, that’s what we assume happens as we don’t actually see Hennix’s death. We only see the lightsaber in mid-air and hear Hennix scream.
It seems as though the death isn’t going to be enough for Kylo Ren to join the Knights of Ren though, before Ren has a change of heart. “It’s a death – but not a good death. Not good enough,” he tells Ben.
“You didn’t really want it. But Snoke vouched for you. And you’re strong in the shadow. And that’s not nothing. Let’s spend some time, see if you like us, see if we like you. Maybe you’ll find that good death after all.”
As issue three ends, we see Ben go off with the Knights of Ren, while back on Elphrona, Voe and Tai look set to track him down to avenge the death of Hennix.
Could the final issue see Ben deliver a “good death” and kill the other two students, finally becoming Kylo Ren in the process? Or will a twist see him actually kill Ren to assume command of the Knights of Ren?
Hopefully the final issue of The Rise of Kylo Ren will definitively solve any mysteries about the Knights of Ren and we can all just move on.
