Last week, Steven Gerrard announced that he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of this season for a new club.
Rumours are rife that he is heading to the US, with current Major League Soccer champions Los Angeles Galaxy favourites to sign up the Liverpool skipper.
If the 34-year-old is set to take his wife Alex and their three daughters Stateside, here are ten things they can expect from their new home.
If there’s one thing that’ll make the Gerrards’ transition from Merseyside to California easier, it’s sure to be the weather. Even in the winter months, Los Angeles has an average temperature of 13 degrees (Liverpool’s average temperature for JUNE) and it rains for less than 40 days of the year.
Steven and Alex are both keen gym bunnies, so they will fit in perfectly with their LA neighbours. Alex has said in her magazine column: “I train around three times per week and on the other days I might do a little run. I think having a personal trainer is really important because they help you psyche yourself up mentally. I know if I have someone there, then it motivates me a lot better. Sometimes when you’re on your own you don’t really push yourself.”
The Gerrards are regular restaurant goers, having been spotted in Liverpool’s San Carlo, Bacaro and the Sir Thomas Hotel, and they will also love the choice of restaurants on offer in LA. The hottest choice at the moment is Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica, beloved of Victoria Beckham and Tana Ramsay. The wives of footballer David Beckham and celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay have been pictured enjoying girls’ nights out before exiting via the private back door.
While we’re talking about Victoria Beckham – Alex has a keen eye for fashion, and has been a long-term admirer of her fellow WAG’s designs. She’s highlighted Victoria’s style choices in her magazine column, praising her “fabulous look – grey skinny jeans and a low-cut grey jersey top with a blazer and wicked platform shoes. She had a maroon crocodile Birkin bag too which really topped it off.”
Alex has designed her own clothing ranges for Lipsy and a fragrance line, so when she gets to LA she will no doubt join the Hollywood fashion pack, with fellow WAG Victoria as her new BFF.
Shopping on Rodeo Drive
Alex loves her shopping – her car was often spotted in Victoria Street while she popped into Cricket – now the retail therapy will know no bounds as she goes Pretty Woman style down Rodeo Drive. They have valet parking so there will be no more ugly yellow tickets on her Range Rover.
Reuniting with old friends
Moving to a new city on the other side of the world can be daunting, especially as it means leaving your friends and family behind. Luckily there will be at least one familiar face greeting Steven in Los Angeles; former Liverpool team-mate Robbie Keane, who now plays for LA Galaxy.
A Scouse heart in California
The pair will be in good company – fellow scousers Ian Hart, Ricky Whittle, Barry Sloane, Jason Isaacs and Eunice Huthart have already crossed the pond, and Anfield singer Rebecca Ferguson is also house-hunting in Los Angeles.
Steven is a karaoke king – he’s always first up and has a pretty good voice. He’s said: “I’ve got a few Oasis and Beatles songs but I’d go for Use Somebody by. I got a standing ovation when I did that at a 30th birthday party.”
He’ll be in his element at Brass Monkey, the most notorious karaoke dive in LA. The ski lodge-style room is famous for its comprehensive karaoke songbook, but waiting times at the weekends can be up to 45 minutes, so he’ll have time to warm up before he gets his shot at the stage.
Theme parks for little ones (and big kids)
Steven and Alex certainly won’t be short of things to keep their three young daughters (Lilly-Ella, Lexie and Lourdes) occupied in California. Universal Studios, Six Flags, Knotts Berry Farm, and of course Disneyland, are all located in and around LA.
Closer to Vegas
The Gerrards are big fans of Las Vegas, and were spotted cosying up to the likes of Calvin Harris at Vegas pool parties last summer. Their new home is less than 300 miles away from Las Vegas, meaning they can hop on a plane and be at the City of Sin in just over an hour.
