Upcoming ‘Tomb Raider’ Movie Sequel Will Adapt Last Two Games Of Rebooted Trilogy

The sequel to the 2018 movie Tomb Raider, starring Alicia Vikander will see the return of the actress under a new director, Ben Wheatley. It’s rather inventively titled Tomb Raider 2 – not to be confused with the 1997 game – and will supposedly encompass the stories from both Rise of the Tomb Raider and its successor, Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

The report comes from Geekvibesnation who claim that filming will start in April with a planned release in 2021. And while the 2018 movie was based on the first game in the new trilogy and incorporated parts of Rise of the Tomb Raider, the sequel will follow the same logic but this time will take parts of Rise and continue into the trilogy’s final instalment, Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Filming is said to take place in England, South Africa, Beijing, and Finland and there is promise of some “supernatural” elements from the games planned on being included in the movie. And while there aren’t more details to share right now – most of the cast has yet to be confirmed – we’ll apparently be hearing more details in the very near future.

The original game series started to decline in popularity in the early 2000s and subsequent games just haven’t been up to par with the originals. Legend and Underworld gained lukewarm receptions at best and let’s not even mention the buggy mess that was Angel of Darkness.

Fans were finally able to breathe a sigh of relief when Crystal Dynamics took over the franchise and ‘rebooted’ the series with Tomb Raider in 2013, giving the similar, Indiana Jones-inspired Uncharted series a run for its money. Gone were the tank-like controls that, in all fairness, seemed perfectly fine on the original PlayStation, and we were presented with a game that felt like Tomb Raider. I mean, if you ignore the (relative) lack of tombs.

Tomb Raider (2018) was the first movie to revisit the world of Lara Croft since Angelina Jolie headed the cast in the early 2000s, during the height of the original series’ popularity. While we don’t have many details so far, its sequel, Tomb Raider 2 has a set release date of 21 March 2021 – though the IMDB listing shows March 19th, so I wouldn’t put the date in your diary just yet.
