Former Brookside actress Sue Johnston to star in new Sky 1 comedy Rovers

Former Brookside actress Sue Johnston is set to star in new Sky 1 comedy Rovers.

The Liverpool FC fan will film the series which promises to be an original take on the goings on of lower league football.

It will see Sue, who was born in Warrington, team up with another former Royle Family star, with Craig Cash as one of the executive producers.

Joe Wilkinson (Him & Her) and David Earl (Derek) have teamed up to pen the comedy about the fans of a local lower league football team Redbridge Rovers.

Sue said: “I’ve completely fallen in love with the world Joe and David have created in Rovers and I can’t wait to start filming.

“And, of course, it will be a joy to be working with Craig Cash again.”

The star, who has appeared in Downton Abbey and Coronation Street, will play matriarchal, hardworking and loose lipped Doreen who over the past quarter of a century has run the place.

Rovers will be produced by Jellylegs, the production company co-founded by Craig, who played Dave in TV comedy series The Royle Family.

Craig said: “Lucy [Lumsden, head of comedy] and Adam [MacDonald, director of Sky 1] continue to commission new writers, a bold move and one that can only be a good thing for the audience and the genre.

“In Rovers David and Joe have created a world that is both laugh out loud funny and as warm as toast.

“A series populated by great characters played by a brilliant cast. Six half hours of pure joy.”
