Kim Cattrall: I am a parent even though I don’t have a child

Sex and the City actress Kim Cattrall has spoken out about how being a mother is not just about giving birth.

On Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio 4 this morning the 59-year-old star, who is originally from Mossley Hill but who moved to Canada as a child, discusses how women can still be mothers even if they are child free.

“I am a parent. I have young actors and actresses that I mentor, I have nephews and nieces whom I am close to,” says Kim who played Samantha both in the hit television show and the movie spin-offs.

“There is a way to become a mother in this day and age that does not involve your name being on a child’s birth certificate. You can express that maternal side. That can be very satisfying.”

She is also expected to discuss the way she and other women who are not natural mothers are labelled.

“It’s the ‘less’ that’s offensive. It sounds like you’re less because you haven’t had a child.”

Kim is one of five influential women chosen to take over BBC Radio 4’s Women’s Hour, along with lingerie boss Michelle Mone and children’s author Dame Jacqueline Wilson.

The Liverpool-born star will be the first of the guest editors, talking about subjects close to her heart alongside presenter Jane Garvey.
