Hollyoaks’ first transgender actress is about to shake things up at Hollyoaks High School.
The soap cast Annie Wallace as new teacher Mrs St Claire who will become a regular face next month.
Annie, who is the latest star to join the Channel 4 soap, was the inspiration behind Coronation Street’s Hayley Cropper character.
The news comes after the revelation EastEnders soap will introduce its first transgender actor.
Riley Carter Millington, 21, has started work as he prepares to join the cast of Albert Square as Kyle ahead of a more regular debut later in the year.
She tweeted: “Delighted for Riley Carter Millington for joining EastEnders. Times are a-changing.”
Annie added: “It’s also hugely important to see a trans MAN in TV soap! bbceastenders AllAboutTrans.”
In 1998, Annie became a research assistant for Corrie’s Julie Hesmondhalgh, who played transgender woman Hayley for 16 years.
After her recent cast announcement, she took to Twitter and admitted she was relieved to have it out in the open.
She tweeted: “It’s been an ‘interesting’ 24 hours!! Glad it’s done and dusted… can get on and make great drama with fabulous colleagues!!! (sic)”
Earlier this week, she tweeted: “It’s NationalComingOutDay… I would not be where I am right now had I not come out earlier this year after 25 years in ‘stealth'”
She added: “It’s a difficult decision to make… but the rewards are immeasurable… especially in the current climate. xxx”
She also wrote that she loved Liverpool and was looking forward to learning more about the home of Hollyoaks.
In 2013, Hollyoaks featured the storyline of teenage transgender character Jasmine Costello.
Fans saw her make the transition towards becoming her male alter ego Jason after living with Gender Identity Disorder (GID) also known as Gender Dysphoria.
