Paul Hollywood promised Bake Off fans that tonight’s final will be the best-tasting final yet.
The winner of this year’s Great British Bake Off is set to be crowned – but viewers could be surprised who lifts the tropy.
Nadiya Jamir Hussain has been consistently strong throughout, earning the title of Star Baker three times and a congratulatory handshake from judge Paul in the semi-final.
Hopefuls Ian Cumming and Tamal Ray have also seen off nine other contestants to make it through to the final round of the sixth series of the show.
But while stay-at-home mum Nadiya is the bookies’ favourite, and has the backing of Prime Minister David Cameron, Wirral baker Paul warns anything can happen.
Paul says: “It is unbelievable tonight because I promise you this is the best tasting final that we’ve ever had. And we’ve got the three best bakers out of that group in the final.
“The last four or five years of Bake Off now we look back on, it never follows a pattern so who knows what’s going to happen tonight.”
Like Nadiya, Ian has been Star Baker three times, with a streak of consecutive wins at the beginning of the series.
The travel photographer has a reputation for being very good on flavour combinations, such as the apple and tarragon cheesecakes in week four which Paul described as “sheer heaven”.
Tamal has been a Star Baker only once, in episode seven’s Victorian Week when his Middle Eastern game pie also earned him the Hollywood handshake.
The medic, 28, has never won the technical challenge, usually coming in the middle of the pack.
Here’s Paul’s verdict on the final three:
Paul says: “Nadiya brings a lot of flavours to the table. She’s great at coming up with ideas that no one has ever done before.”
Paul says: “Now that’s precision all the way. He often comes up with things which are quite daring but he gets away with it a lot of the time. He’s won star baker on more than one occasion.”
Paul says: “Tamal’s a natural baker. He comes up with stuff which is just sublime. When he nails it, he absolutely nails it.”
The Bake Off star joined Warrington-born Chris Evans on his BBC Radio 2 breakfast show earlier today.
- The Great British Bake Off final airs tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
