Picture the scene: you’re hanging out, living your life, enjoying some crisps – when out of nowhere, you have your hands on what might just be a record-breaker.
Like that, an otherwise mundane day has been transformed by a magical moment you’ll be telling your grandchildren about.
Janine Ross, from Liverpool, UK, was minding her own business, chowing down on a packet of 69p Asda own brand onion rings with her friend’s daughter Izzy when they were taken aback by a monstrous snack – which quite frankly wasn’t a ring at all.
It’s hard to know whether this is the UK’s biggest crisp for various reasons. First of all, it was kind of bent and difficult to get an exact measurement. Secondly, these sort of things aren’t as well documented as 100m records and the like.
Reflecting on the monumental discovery, 38-year-old Ms Ross said: “We were at a birthday party when I found it, every was shocked and just started laughing hysterically.
“We weren’t expecting one that size, we have quite a few packets a month and they are usually the regular ‘o’ shape – but this one was huge.
“If it was straightened out it would be about 20cm long, I took a picture of it by a tape measure and you can see it’s massive.”
She added that she feels ‘lucky’ to have found the onion tube and has it in safekeeping.
She said: “It looks like a production line error. It’s like they all come in a tube and are cut down, but that process missed this one.
“This one must have slipped the net, it feels lucky – we might go buy a lottery ticket now.
“We haven’t eaten it, it’s our prized possession. I might give it to Izzy – if she behaves.”
As Ms Ross points out, this colossal crisp is almost definitely a gift bestowed upon us by a production error, however, much larger crisps have been intentionally created by man.
According to World’s Largest Things – who really ought to be the authority on this sort of thing – the largest crisp in the world was made by a team of food engineers employed by Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati, Ohio, on 3 June 1991.
The crisp measures 25 x 14 inches and weighs 153 grams.
