Video Captures Moment Ice Smashes Through Car Windscreen On The Motorway

Video footage has emerged that shows the terrifying moment that a sheet of ice flew from the top of a lorry in the fast lane of the motorway and shattered through a car’s windscreen.

The person in the car, nurse Laura Smith, admitted that she was “lucky to be alive” following the incident that took place on the M6.

Luckily, she was able to control the car after the block of ice came crashing through her car’s front window, but she also said that she “feared for her life” at the time of the shocking incident.

The whole thing was captured on a mounted camera on the dashboard of Laura’s Peugeot 3008 and she’s agreed to release it to raise awareness and to encourage people to check the top of their vehicles for ice to avoid a situation like this.

The next time, the poor driver behind might not be quite as fortunate.

Laura, from Rugby in Warwickshire, said: “I could have died and feel so lucky.

“I was driving in the fast lane of the motorway and I feel fortunate that the only damage done was to the vehicle.

“I feel lucky to still be here and it is scary to think about what could have happened. It was very scary when it happened and I was in a real state of shock.

“It all happened incredibly quickly and I was very panicked.”

Laura was driving home from a shift at Coventry Hospital at around 4:30PM on February 12019 when the horrendous near-miss happened.

She managed to slow herself down whilst steering her car over to the hard shoulder, and was then given an escort home by police who were coincidentally behind her in traffic.

She continued: “I thought someone had thrown something at me. I thought someone was trying to hurt me.

“I slowed down and put the hazard lights on so I could pull onto the hard shoulder. It was very scary and I was shaking.”

Now, she hopes that seeing what happened to her will encourage lorry drivers – and everyone else – to check the top of their vehicles for frozen water.

She added: “If more people were aware of the risks then they are more likely to check the tops of their vehicles.

“It can have a really bad effect and I do feel lucky to be here today.”
