Brewers reportedly in agreement with reliever not named Craig Kimbrel

Apparently Craig Kimbrel wasn’t the only reliever the Milwaukee Brewers had their eye on.

The Brewers are in agreement on a contract with right-hander Alex Wilson, a free-agent reliever who is not Kimbrel, The Athletic’s Robert Murray and Ken Rosenthal reported Friday.

Wilson, who began his MLB career with the Red Sox and was part of Boston’s 2014 trade with the Detroit Tigers for Rick Porcello, opted out of his contract with the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday after being informed he wouldn’t make the major league roster.

But the 32-year-old apparently has a new home in Milwaukee, which reportedly was in discussions with Kimbrel about a potential deal.

Wilson’s signing doesn’t preclude the Brewers from also signing Kimbrel, but it does make a deal less likely, as Milwaukee already has a pretty crowded bullpen with Corey Knebel, Josh Hader and Jeremy Jeffress in the fold.

If the Brewers opt to stand pat, it’s back to square one for Kimbrel, who finished second in the American League with 42 saves last season but still is unemployed with under a week before (non-Japan) regular-season action begins.

The Red Sox have said they’re happy with their current bullpen, but if Kimbrel still doesn’t have any offers and lowers his price tag, Boston may have to reconsider.
