Let’s face it: Shopping for concealer is hard. It has one job, sure — concealing. But in order to do that, before we can even get to formula preference, it’s got to match your skin tone. This is easier said than done, unfortunately, since you’re working against poor, inaccurate lighting in a beauty store, the impossibility of swatching with drugstore products, and the even more confusing shade-matching options with e-comm purchases (even when you do know your undertones). And sometimes, your shade just isn’t included in a collection. Over the past two years, however, a growing number of makeup brands have been getting on board and finally formulating foundations and concealers that cater to every skin tone across the spectrum, from the lightest porcelain to darkest ebony complexions.
One could say it’s the Fenty Beauty Effect, seeing as there’s no doubt Rihanna helped publicize the outcry for inclusive makeup shade ranges when she launched her eponymous beauty brand in 2017 (and again when she recently dropped a whopping 50 new shades of concealer). There’s also the legions of people, some of which include high-profile celebrities and influencers with massive fan bases, who are speaking up and demanding better. Whatever the catalyst was, what we know for sure is that four, five — even 15 shades — will no longer be the norm or considered acceptable if we continue to move at this rate. Soon enough, we hope to see makeup shelves become home to countless collections with shades ranges in the 20s, 30s, 40s, and beyond. In the meantime, we’re highlighting the brands that have already hit high numbers with a list of the best concealer formulas that come in a minimum of 20 shades or more — and at a range of price points (including one for just $5).
