BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech tight end Chris Cunningham tweeted that his “recruitment is now open” on Tuesday night.
Cunningham made his announcement moments after wide receiver Eric Kumah tweeted that he plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal.
“Thank you, Hokie Nation for your unwavering support through the gains and losses we endured as a team this season,” Cunningham said. “Thank you to Coach Fuente, and his staff for everything they’ve done for me the past 3 years. I would also like to thank Coach Beamer for giving a kid from Jacksonville the chance of a lifetime. A chance I’ll forever be grateful for. Nevertheless, after lots of consideration I feel as though it is in my best interest to transfer from Virginia Tech. I am looking forward to starting a new chapter where I can excel further, academically and athletically.”
Cunningham had seven catches for 74 yards with two touchdowns. He had two catches for 22 yards with a touchdown in the Military Bowl against Cincinnati. The 6-foot-2, 245-pounder is a fourth-year junior out of Atlantic Coast High School in Florida.
