Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hopes to play more games alongside Arsenal strike partner

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has urged Unai Emery to stick with a two-man attack at Arsenal after being deployed alongside Alexandre Lacazette at the weekend.

Although Aubameyang didn’t score in the 2-0 win over Chelsea at the weekend, he does already have 14 Premier League goals to his name this season, while Lacazette opened the scoring during that win.

Should Arsenal play two up front? Four key things to know…

  1. Despite having two top-class strikers at his disposal in Aubameyang and Lacazette, Unai Emery often fields just one up front.
  2. Aubameyang has 14 Premier League goals so far this season, while Lacazette has eight.
  3. Emery paired the two up-front in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Chelsea on Saturday, with Lacazette opening the scoring.
  4. Aubameyang has called upon Emery to stick with this partnership, saying he and Lacazette share ‘the same vision of football.’

The pair have formed a strong bond off the pitch since Aubameyang moved to the club in January 2018, and the Gabonese striker has called upon his manager to allow that bond to flourish on the pitch more often.

“It was really nice,” said Aubameyang.

“I think we did a lot of runs, a lot of efforts for the team, we worked a lot and of course we are happy when we play together because we have such a good feeling between us. It was cool.”

The former Dortmund striker was also asked if he can continue being paired with Lacazette, to which he responded: “Why not? Sincerely, I hope so because when you have a striker like Alex near to you then he’s really good to play with. I hope we will play more games together.

“Since I joined Arsenal he was here and he came to me and talked to me and now we are going well, we have the same vision about football and I love him! He’s a great guy.

“It is nice between us, it’s not a bad rivalry, we are friends. When one is going well the other is happy and that’s the most important thing, to do well.”

Aubameyang: I will do more

Even without scoring, Aubameyang still played a key role in Arsenal’s win over Chelsea on Saturday.

That victory puts the Gunners just three points behind their London rivals, who occupy the fourth and final Champions League spot at present, but Aubameyang has vowed to ‘do more’ to help his teammates catch Chelsea.

“I can do a bit more. I hope I will. I try to. I hope I will do it,” added Aubameyang.

“This win was very important. We knew that it was important to get a result. It’s a very good win for us because now we are only three points from Chelsea. We’re not far. We will try to keep the distance very low.

“This gives us a lot of confidence that we can finish the season well.”

Arsenal face Man United in the FA Cup on Friday.
