Primark v Jo Malone perfume – how similar are they?

[ad_1]

You may have noticed a lot of ‘smell-alikes’ in the shops – they are the own-brand perfumes that you can find in many high street stores and supermarkets.

They’re not direct copies but they do tend to smell pretty similar to the big designer brands, and you’ll probably notice the product name and packaging are similar too.

The crucial part of a smell-alike is they normally cost a fraction of the price.

While some people may not be impressed with receiving a smell-alike as a gift, they’re perfect if you’re buying them for yourself where brands can be less of an issue.

But are they worth a try in comparison to the expensive brands?

The Money Savings Expert team carried out a blind smell test to pit Jo Malone against the cheaper Primark alternative – these are the results.

Primark ‘Pomegranate & Black Tea’ vs Jo Malone ‘Pomegranate Noir’

Primark 100ml: £8 in Primark stores

Jo Malone 100ml: £94 at John Lewis

The blind smell test found that 16 out of 20 people either couldn’t tell the difference or preferred the cheaper perfume !

Primark ‘Mandarin & Basil’ vs Jo Malone ‘Lime Basil & Mandarin’

Primark 100ml: £8 in Primark stores

Jo Malone 100ml: £94 at John Lewis

The blind smell test found that nine out of 20 people either couldn’t tell the difference or preferred the cheaper perfume. So in this case 11 of the testers preferred the smell of the expensive Jo Malone .

Who knew a bit of lime would make so much difference!

So it looks like there’s no set rule for smell-alikes – you’ll just have to go and test them for yourself!
