ECB cuts rates to ward off euro zone deflation threat
- The European Central Bank cut interest rates to new record lows on Thursday, unexpectedly lowering borrowing costs to try to lift inflation from rock-bottom levels and support the stagnating euro zone eco**my. The ECB cut its main refinancing rate to 0.05 percent from 0.15 percent. ECB President Mario Draghi had said after the ECB's last rate cut in June that "for all the practical purposes, we have reached the lower bound". In a landmark speech on Aug. 22, however, Draghi said indications from financial markets showed inflation expectations "exhibited significant declines at all horizons" in August.

- By Terry Wade HOUSTON (Reuters) - BP Plc was "grossly negligent" for its role in the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico four years ago, a U.S. BP shares traded in London closed down nearly 6 percent, the worst one day slide in more than four years. District Judge Carl Barbier in New Orleans held a trial without a jury last year to determine who was responsible for the April 20, 2010 environmental disaster. Barbier ruled that BP was mostly at fault and that two other companies in the case, Transocean Ltd and Halliburton , were **t as much to blame.

Boeing beats Airbus on jet orders as both top 1,000 this year
- By Tim Hepher and Alwyn Scott PARIS/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Airbus and Boeing both topped 1,000 new jet orders in the first eight months of the year, but Boeing is far ahead after adjusting for cancellations. Chicago-based Boeing also has delivered more planes this year than its European rival, hanging on to the title of world's largest plane maker. The planemaking subsidiary of Airbus Group sold 21 aircraft in August, a traditionally quiet month following the busy Farnborough Airshow in July, bringing its total gross orders for the year to 1,001 aircraft, monthly data showed. In contrast, Boeing Co booked 107 orders in the same month, bringing total gross orders for the year to 1,004.

Shares of Electrolux jumped on news of a possible deal, rising 4.73 percent to 190.40 Swedish crowns and giving it a market capitalization of more than $8 billion. Representatives for GE and Electrolux declined to comment. GE's century-old household appliance business, which along with lighting generated $8.3 billion in 2013 revenue, could help the Swedish appliance manufacturer expand beyond its core European market where growth has trailed that in **rth America.

- Working conditions at a Chinese factory supplying parts for Apple Inc iPads and MacBooks are dangerous and have even deteriorated since they were highlighted a year ago, two labor watchdogs said on Thursday. Apple, however, said many of the problems were corrected after an inspection last week. U.S.-based China Labor Watch and Green America said in a joint statement that an investigation last month at Catcher Tech**logy Co Ltd (Suqian), part of Taiwan-based Catcher Tech**logy Co Ltd, had found hazardous working conditions, with flammable aluminum-magnesium alloy filings scattered on the factory floor, and fire exits and ******* locked. The proposed new rule for the world's biggest banks is part of a wider plan for making banks safer after governments had to shore up lenders during the 2007-09 financial crisis. The new buffers, k**wn as "gone concern loss absorption capacity" or GLAC, are being drafted by the Financial Stability Board (FSB), the regulatory task force of the Group of 20 eco**mies, and at meetings this week there was progress on agreeing core elements for the G20 summit in **vember to endorse said the sources.
