"It is the murder of an appalling child," the New Zealand Supreme Court judge was quoted as saying during the verdict.
The mother claimed that her son, Joseph, died after stumbling with a rope tied to the family's dogs in the yard. However, she confessed to the security men that the child was very irritated and that she had thought of killing him.
"Do not misunderstand me," she said. "I really loved the child. But there was a part of me that hated him because he looked like his father because he was the son of his father."
"Instead of looking after her child, he punished him as if he were responsible for his father's mistakes," the judge said, "it is a strange and brutal picture of her behavior with her child."
Investigations have shown that the child was tortured in the days leading up to his death. The mother was shocked by a cupboard and covered his eyes with a tape.
The judge said the victim was "seriously at risk" and that his mother and her partner had exhausted him "physically and psychologically."
